workhouse

Workhouse was a place where those who cannot find jobs were given work in exchange of money. The earliest workhouse was established in 1631.The reason workhouse was established was because of the Poor Law Act during the 1380s, which was trying to solve the labor shortages problem after the Black Death in England, and later becoming a place responsible for the support of the poor. After the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, there was way too many people without work, and due to the industrial revolution, machines replace human work, and bad harvests. These caused the system became useless. After that, workhouse became a place known as horrible environment and for poor people, so people refused to work there. The New Poor Law of 1834 tried to change this workhouse system by dissuade giving money to those who did not want to work at workhouse.
